The Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce recently commissioned the Killeen Civic Art Guild to paint a mural downtown on the vacant lot located at 223 E. Avenue D (Ave D and Gray St.). The mural, sponsored by Solix, Inc., has been completed and a dedication ceremony was held Friday, November 11 at 9:30 am, shortly before the Veteran’s Day Parade in front of the mural in downtown Killeen.

The theme of the mural is “Camp Hood to Ft. Hood – Embracing Our Rich Military History.” It is undeniable that our city has been shaped by the presence of Fort Hood. This mural is a tribute to that bond, and a display of the exceptional talent that lives in our community. The intent is that it will also spark interest in further art displays in the downtown area, which are a key factor in any city’s downtown revitalization efforts.

As City of Killeen Revitalization Planner Alisha Workman explains, “public art in Historic Downtown Killeen is important because it can be viewed as a means to activate civic dialogue and provide a vehicle for the community to express its identity. This community mural project connects artists with the Killeen community, while enhancing our experience of a place – adding vitality and liveliness.”

Downtown business owners have expressed a great deal of interest in the mural and what it could mean for their businesses. Chamber Chairman Abdul Subhani remarked, “as the owner of a business in downtown Killeen, I am excited to see the development of this mural showcasing our community's rich history. The mural is part of ongoing revitalization efforts to increase community interest in the downtown area and encourage new businesses to open in downtown.”
