KILLEEN, Texas – The Altrusa Club of Central Texas will be presented with the 2nd place award for the International Competition of the Letha H. Brown Literacy Award at the October 8, 2013 Killeen Independent School District Board Meeting. Eligibility for this award was earned after the Altrusa Club of Central Texas was named the 1st place winner of the District Nine (State of Texas) Letha H. Brown Literacy Award.
The Altrusa Club of Central Texas partnered with the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and the KISD to create the “Share Your Story, Share Your Dream” project. This project aimed to encourage literacy through a writing and illustrating contest for 5th graders of local public, private, and parochial schools, as well as home schooled students. A total of 246 students from sixteen schools participated in the project during its first year.
This program was nominated and won the District Nine Award at the district conference in April 2013. Collin County and SE Tarrant County Early Risers came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Each district winner was then qualified to compete for the international award. Altrusa Central Texas was presented with Letha H. Brown Literacy Award 1st Honorable Mention at the Altrusa International Convention in New Zealand in July 2013.
